Managing Expectations

Managing Expectations can be so easy if you remember some every simple to follow rules...

Firstly lets look at the human behaviour in a business situation. Question: How many of your superior/s like bad news surprises? My answer is none...

It is typical human nature to not want to hear bad news...although it may end up becoming a positive opportunity. We are sometime fearful of those aspects of our job that may be deemed "Nasty", furthermore we may shy away from them. I advise against this tactic...all you will do is exacerbate the problem further at a later point in time...

How would it sound if you were to hint and plant seeds with your superiors all the way along a set of circumstances that may be predictably negative? The technique is simple....

1. Keep your eye out for predictably negative insights staff or managers around you may identify as a "Risk". Business risk assessments are a great method of dealing with this aspect.

2. The first sign of trouble warn anyone you can about the scenario and plan to counter it.

3. Advise your superiors, in writing, with a brief explanation of the situation....ADD your solution and monitory actions to avert the potential negative phenomenon.

4. If in an event that you are unable to divert the problem you have a full account of the situations and potentially have reduced it impact....You also avoid the surprises.
